- Kelly Clarkson, 38, says she was once mistaken for Carrie Underwood by a fan.
- The Voice coach didn’t want to embarrass the fan, so she signed an autograph as Underwood.
- Apparently, both singers get mistaken for one another all the time.
Kelly Clarkson opened up about an “awkward” encounter she once had with a fan who mistook her as fellow American Idol winner Carrie Underwood. On Friday, The Voice coach sat down with Cheryl Hines and Michelle Buteau for a round of “I’m Awesome at Being Awkward” on The Kelly Clarkson Show.
While discussing a number of uncomfortable situations each star had found themselves in, Clarkson recalled a time a young woman approached her for an autograph—or so she thought.
“This girl came up to me and was like, ‘Oh my god, your song ‘So Small’ is one of my favorites,’” she explained. “And I kept thinking, ‘I don’t have a song ‘So Small.’” And then she said another song and I was like, ‘Oh, you think I’m Carrie Underwood.’”
Clarkson said she wasn’t sure how to handle the situation, so she decided to just go along with it rather than embarrass the fan.
“I literally look nothing like Carrie Underwood,” she said. “I was so embarrassed for her that I just…She was like, ‘Can you sign this?’ And I totally signed ‘Carrie Underwood.’ I think that might be illegal!”

This isn’t the first time Clarkson has been mistaken for Underwood. The Voice coach previously opened up on Z100’s Elvis Duran and The Morning Show about fans coming up to her and thinking she’s the “Cry Pretty” singer.
“People come up to me all the time. Okay, we look nothing alike, we sound nothing alike, there’s nothing about us that’s similar, really, except we were both on Idol,” she said. “People are always like, ‘I love your song, ‘So Small,’ and I’m like, ‘Thank you. Thank you, I think you’re thinking I’m Carrie Underwood.’ It always happens!”
Apparently, Underwood also gets approached by fans who think she’s Clarkson. “I think it’s just because we’re blonde and from American Idol,” she said.
Clarkson and Underwood go way back in their friendship, ever since Underwood won American Idol three years after Clarkson became the first season’s champion. The singers have supported each other on social media many times. In 2019, Clarkson shut down rumors that there was a feud between them on Twitter: “I officially have a feud with whoever used this pic! At least give me a good pic if y’all are gonna be lying is all I’m sayin’.”
